What is Digital Smile Design (DSD)?

DSD is a unique dental treatment planning tool that strengthens a dental provider’s diagnostic vision, enhances predictability, and improves communication between dental providers and their patients. DSD helps dentists get a better sense of the relationship between the lips, gums, and teeth, as well as how they work together to create the patient’s smile.

Step 1

During the first appointment, Dr Van de Merwe will make a detailed diagnosis of the oral problems that you have. He takes multiple photographs and videos of the mouth and full facial profile. Impressions are also taken.

Step 2

The digital smile design is performed on the study models. An artistic “mock-up” is formulated onto the models to create a prototype of the proposed changes can be created. The “mock-up” is then transferred to the patient's mouth with a special acrylic. The process creates a 3-dimensional view of the proposed treatment plan. After this process, Dr Juan Van De Merwe will create a custom made treatment plan and provide an estimation of the costs involved.

Step 3

The teeth are prepared according to the prototype. This preparation phase might include only a single visit, or it might also include a period of adjustment and any surgery that’s needed to support the structures. Micro records of the teeth are then sent to Johan Havenga Labs, so they can manufacture the restorations.

Step 4

The final restorations are delivered. Thereafter, final photographs are taken, and a maintenance programme is formulated. The maintenance program will differ depending on the type of treatment that was performed.
